What are silk flowers?
Silk flowers are artificial versions of the natural flowering thing. Because fake flowers were originally fabricated from fine luxurious silks, the name “silk flowers” proceeds their ancient history. Today, artificial flowers allow for a stress-free alternative to the real deal.
-
Are silk flowers made from silk?
At the time of their invention, yes, artificial flowers were in fact originally fabricated from soft, lavish silks naturally produced (and perfected) by the Chinese by way of silk worming. For many generations, artificial flowers and silk flower arrangements were intricately crafted by hand with the help of this rich material; then once the phenomenon spread across the continents, artisans would shortly thereafter start incorporating other luxurious fabrics like velvets, gauze, and crepe into these lavish faux botanicals. However today most artificial plants and flowers are actually made from plastic, polyester, and other high quality, man-made materials.

If silk flowers aren't actually silk, what are they made from?
The materials that artificial flowers have evolved from is unlimited; at first it was purely silk, then artisans shortly thereafter started incorporating other luxurious fabrics like velvets, gauze, and crepe. Today in the modern era, fake flowers are mostly made from high-quality plastics and other man-made textiles.

How to clean artificial flowers?
While our selection of fake flowers will eliminate the need for daily maintenance, you will periodically want to clean it and wipe away any dust it might have gathered. We recommend doing this with a feather duster or a microfiber cleaning cloth and/or spare cleaning towelettes, gently dusting and removing any excess dirt, dust, and debris from your artificial plants. If easily portable, bring your artificial arrangement outside and use a paintbrush to remove any extra dirt that has accumulated not only on the faux-liage, but within the planter itself (like on the moss, rocks, and setting).

How to make fake flowers look real?
While living flowers are great for filling living spaces with fresh color and life, there’s no denying that fake flowers can provide just as much beauty as the realistic flora; and while you might be hesitant in making the leap into artificial flora with just a few tips on Styling Fake Flowers, you can easily make fake flowers look real when creating your own one-of-a-kind botanical creations.

Are your flowers real-touch?
Some of them, and this is our advantage! We do have some real-touch flowers in our range, but not all our flowers are real-touch. As trained fresh florists, we strive to sell only items that we feel are botanically correct. In the product description it will say if the product contains real-touch stems. In some of our arrangements this may change due to availabilities, so please be in touch if this is a requirement.
-
Are all the blooms pure silk?
Fortunately not. Silk, despite its luxurious connotations, is simply not as cost effective or versatile as other materials more commonly used today. Silk flowers were named over one-hundred years ago, when artificial blooms were sewn with silk. While we still refer to them as “silk” flowers, the current manufacturing methods use synthetic fibers and high-tech processes to create botanically accurate and supple to the touch artificial flowers.
There are still some pockets of pure silk flowers but their scarcity and price make them less viable for retail purposes. Polyester has been the main material for manufacturing artificial flowers since the 1970s. Most artificial flowers in the market nowadays are made of polyester fabric.
Why do we call ourselves a Silk Flower Design Studio then? Well, whilst our opportunity to design with pure silk is limited we have deliberately used the word silk in our tagline as a way of addressing common misconceptions including that polyester is the inferior version of fake flowers. In fact polyester is used in some of the most exquisite blooms we range and nothing compares to the fluid movement and natural color tones the material is able to deliver.
